Your Brain on Summer: What the Heat is Actually Doing to Your Focus

st motivation. It's your nervous system doing exactly what it's built to do.

The evidence
Heat doesn't hit all thinking equally. A review of research on firefighters found that simple tasks such as choice reaction, memory recall, and simple arithmetic tend to hold up or even improve under heat stress, while complex tasks like vigilance, sustained attention, and working memory consistently suffer (Thompson et al., 2024). In other words: heat doesn't make you stupid. It makes you less able to hold multiple things in mind at once, which is precisely the skill most knowledge work depends on.
The mechanism isn't mysterious. A field study of workers in a casting plant found that heat stress impaired cognitive function, showing up as longer task duration, slower response time, and more errors (Mazloumi et al., 2014), consistent with a broader body of research on thermal stress and working memory. Your brain is quietly reallocating resources toward temperature regulation, and something has to give. That something is usually the mental bandwidth you'd otherwise spend on planning, prioritizing, and holding a thread of thought together.
Not every study agrees on magnitude, and that's worth naming honestly. Some research on chronic, moderate heat exposure, as opposed to acute extreme heat, found no meaningful cognitive impact at all. A study of oil and gas workers tested in a quiet, temperature-controlled room found that living and working in a hot climate did not alter cognitive performance when hyperthermia wasn't present (Girard et al., 2021). The pattern that holds up best across studies is dose- and task-dependent: brief, extreme, or poorly-recovered-from heat exposure hits complex cognition hardest; mild or well-acclimatized heat often doesn't move the needle much at all.
What this means for the "summer slump"
If you've felt your focus fray this month, that's not a discipline problem. It's a predictable response to a predictable stressor, and it responds to the same principles that show up everywhere else in learning and performance:
Protect your hardest thinking for your coolest hours. If working memory is the first casualty, front-load complex tasks (strategy, writing, analysis) into the part of the day before heat and fatigue compound.
Shorten the loop, don't abandon it. This is where spaced practice earns its keep again: shorter, more frequent sessions on demanding work outperform one long grind when your cognitive reserve is already taxed.
Recovery is the intervention, not the reward. The research on heat and memory consolidation suggests the body needs real recovery time to reset, not just a cooler room. A five-minute walk indoors doesn't undo an afternoon of heat load the way an actual break in a cooled, quiet space does.
None of this is about pushing through. It's about recognizing that summer changes the conditions your brain is operating under, and adjusting the work to match the conditions, the same way you'd adjust a training program or an evaluation design when the underlying context shifts.
So if July has you feeling foggier than usual, that's not you falling behind. That's data.
